Bridge Building Competition 2017 Western Cape

The Western Cape leg of the annual SAICE bridge building competition was held in May at Canal Walk, and Alcolin was once again a present sponsor. We provided our fast setting Super Glue to the 31 different teams to help them build a competition-winning bridge.

The day started off bright and early with all teams listening to an introductory bridge building lecture by Evan Arendse of BEPSA consulting engineers. Then, after a brief explanation of the rules, the team were busy building for the greater part of the day. This year’s bridge needed to span a minimum of 820mm and a height restriction of 160mm was set. All were finished by 4pm where the judging process commenced.

First place was secured by Brackenfell High School (defending champions) whose bridge (with some help from Alcolin’s Super Glue of course!) held up a mammoth 295kg. Glendale High School won the People’s Choice Award for an elegant arch bridge, while the Best Spirited team was awarded to Oude Molen; whose Health & Safety was beyond impressive.
